Ramsgrange Community School Gym Mural

This mural was painted on the gym wall at Ramsgrange Community School, a place I’ve worked with many times and one that’s already filled with artwork throughout the building. Creativity is very much part of the school’s identity, so adding another piece felt like building on something that already exists rather than introducing something new.

The quote — “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself” by George Bernard Shaw — was chosen by the art students who helped paint the mural.

Working at this scale always comes with challenges. For this piece, that meant spending long hours on a tower scaffold, which pushed me to confront a fear of heights while staying focused on the work. It’s never the most comfortable part of mural painting, but it’s part of what makes large-scale projects so rewarding.

As with previous projects at Ramsgrange, the students were closely involved in the process, and that collaboration is embedded in the final piece. The mural now sits comfortably among the many artworks around the school — another shared mark of a community that values creativity and participation.
